Right after the UIS festival I spend some days at Centro de Educación Musical de Bucaramanga with some talented students. We did clinics on improvisation, jazz, ensembles as well as individual piano classes.
So much young talent in Colombia!

On August 21-22 I was invited to perform at the XXXI Festival Internacional de Piano UIS in Bucaramanga, COLOMBIA.
This time I played with Italian saxophonist Gianni Bardaro at the magnificent Luis A. Calvo Concert Hall. We played to a full house and the next day We did a second concert in Barrancabermeja also as part of the Festival. In addition, we did some clinics with students from UIS. I was very glad to visit this amazing city and share with these wonderful people. Until next time!

On July 26th I will be back to the Jazz Gallery again with Matana Robert’s Anthem. I had been collaborating with Matana for a number of years and being someone who likes to explore music within wide boundaries this is one of my most fun projects to play in. Please join us!

We did a show at Spire Center for Performing Arts in Plymouth, MA with a great audience.
Bruce Gertz Quintet featuring Jerry Bergonzi and Phil Grenadier playing music from “Open Mind” album.

While in Boston around 2002 I formed with New England Conservatory classmates my first and most important band, Surca Quartet. After performing continuously for a couple of years, the band went into a long hiatus. Finally after several attempts to play together again I was lucky to play at the Jazz Gallery one of my favorite venues in New York. This was a special reunion since we hadn’t played together in public for more than 10 years! We played mostly new music to be released soon.

Last April I was lucky to bring my New York trio to Colombia for the first time. We performed at the historic landmark for the arts and the most important chamber hall in Colombia, Sala de Conciertos Luis Ángel Arango in Bogota. This time we performed some material from FEYAS record, as well as a good number of new material. The concert was very special as we got to see a lot of familiar and new faces. This show was dedicated to the memory of my friend Jazz advocate and broadcaster Rafael Serrano who passed away just two months before.

bruce3NEW RELEASE! Honored to be part of this new recording by Bruce Gertz Quintet, featuring Jerry Bergonzi & George Garzone on saxophones/compositions, Luther Gray on drums, and myself on piano, this was one of the most fun an memorable sessions I’ve done.

“Gertz has a special knack for putting exceptional and exceptionally complementary solo voices together in his bands. He did it in his first recording quintet, where Jerry Bergonzi’s tenor and John Abercrombie’s guitar were paired in the front line; in his successor unit, with Ken Cervenka’s or Phil Grenadier’s trumpet in place of guitar; The Bergonzi-Gertz connection is well known and well documented, going back to the saxophonist’s ‘80s band Con Brio. As Gertz points out, however, “I met George Garzone in 1974, a few years before I met Jerry. George and I played together with Bill Frisell in a band called Ictus and with Mike Stern at the old Michael’s Pub, and back then I even subbed a few times in the Fringe. The idea of recording with George and Jerry together is something we’ve been talking about for years, at least as far back as the ‘90s when we were all in the double trio GarGonz.” The two tenors have only recorded together on one previous occasion, on a hard-to-find 1987 disc co-led by guitarist Tisziji Munoz and drummer Bob Moses.

This present encounter should be warmly received by the pair’s many students and fans, and will no doubt prove instructive to those with a less complete knowledge of their respective work. Like far too many complete musicians, Bergonzi and Garzone are often typed – the former as the king of complex chord substitutions, the latter as an anything-goes champion of all-out freedom. If Anybody Home? has a point to make beyond the quality of its individual performances, it is that each can function as an equal on the other’s supposed home territory.” – Bob Blumenthal
